The Vision of Philip J. Klingman

Philip J. Klingman of Portsmouth, Ohio came to Grand Rapids as a young man in his twenties. Aggressive, a master salesman, and an entrepreneur who disregarded tradition, he visualized a center where manufacturers could display their wares to dealers from across the country.

His vision of a national furniture market in Grand Rapids came true, and his commitment to providing quality home furnishings at affordable prices is a tradition we proudly carry on today.

The Beginning

Philip J. Klingman founded the Klingman Sample Furniture Company in Grand Rapids, selling market samples at discounted prices.

1900s

Growth & Expansion

The business grew to occupy the largest furniture display building in America on Ottawa Ave.

Klingman's Furniture moved to the suburbs, expanding to serve more Michigan communities.
